In enclosure experiments in the littoral zone of Lake Constance, Germany, juvenile cyprinids showed significantly reduced somatic growth in the shallow eulittoral zone (0·5 m depth) compared to the sublittoral zone (1·6 m depth). Growth was especially reduced in larger and more deep-bodied fish groups, providing evidence that this is due to increased hydrodynamic stress, induced by ship and wind waves, in the shallow habitats compared to the deep habitat. Other factors such as water temperature and food availability seemed to be of minor importance for the observed growth differences. Gillnet catches at the experimental site and an adjacent site showed that most juvenile cyprinids, including the species from the enclosure study, bream Abramis brama and dace Leuciscus leuciscus , nonetheless prefer shallow habitats compared to deeper sublittoral habitats. Juvenile cyprinids in Lake Constance may prefer these shallow habitats as refuges against larger piscivorous predators, mainly perch Perca fluviatilis , despite the cost in terms of reduced somatic growth indicating that juvenile cyprinids first of all optimize survival rate instead of somatic growth rate.  相似文献

The present authors have shown previously that both respiration rates and in vivo activities of the alternative oxidase (AOX) of leaves of Alocasia odora, a shade species, are lower than those in sun species, thereby optimizing energy production under limited light conditions (Noguchi et al., Australian Journal of Plant Physiology 28, 27–35, 2001). In the present study, mitochondria isolated from A. odora leaves were examined in order to investigate the biochemical basis for the differences in respiratory parameters. Alocasia odora and spinach plants were cultivated under both high and low light intensities, mitochondria were isolated from their leaves, and their respiratory properties compared. Mitochondrial content of leaf extracts from the two species was estimated using fumarase activities and antibody detection of porin (the voltage-dependent anion channel of the outer mitochondrial membrane). On a mitochondrial protein basis, spinach leaves showed higher capacities of the cytochrome pathway and cytochrome c oxidase (COX) than A. odora leaves. However, on a mitochondrial protein basis, A. odora showed higher capacities of AOX, which had a high affinity for ubiquinone when activated by pyruvate. Alocasia odora also had larger amounts of mitochondrial protein per leaf dry weight, even under severely shaded conditions, than spinach. Lower growth light intensity led to lower activities of most pathways and proteins tested in both species, especially glycine-dependent oxygen uptake. In the low light environment, most of the AOX protein in A. odora leaves was in its inactive, oxidized dimer form, but was converted to its reduced active form when plants were grown under high light. This shift may prevent over-reduction of the respiratory chain under photo-oxidative conditions.  相似文献

Plankton population dynamics: food web interactions and abiotic constraints   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. In this introduction, I try to follow some developments in plankton ecology, how they have led to current research topics, and how the contributions in this issue of Freshwater Biology are related to these fields of research.
2. Due to several favourable features, such as small size, short generation time and a relatively homogeneous habitat, planktonic organisms remain ideal subjects for theoretical and experimental population ecology.
3. Important current research topics involve: (1) the control of plankton communities by external abiotic factors; (2) bottom-up (limitation by resources) and top-down (control by predators) effects in the food web; (3) the importance of dormant resting stages and benthic–pelagic coupling in plankton dynamics; (4) costs and benefits of the mixotrophic strategy, i.e. the ability to combine a phototrophic and a phagotrophic mode of nutrition.  相似文献

The impact of Dreissena polymorpha settlement on recruitment of juvenile mussels and density of other macroinvertebrates was studied in field experiments using blank concrete blocks and tiles (control), blocks and tiles with attached empty zebra mussel shells, and blocks and tiles with attached living mussels. On blocks, dominant invertebrate taxa showed colonization patterns coinciding with increased habitat complexity owing to zebra mussel settlement or the biodeposition of faeces and pseudofaeces. Adult and especially juvenile zebra mussels preferred blocks with empty shells to blank blocks and blocks with living mussels; this might possibly be caused by a chemical cue that induces gregarious settlement. Lower recruitment on blocks with attached living mussels compared to blocks with only shells could be the consequence of ingestion of larvae by adult mussels and of competition for food. On tiles, the sediments deposited and the organic content of the sediment were investigated. Sedimentation was significantly higher on shell‐only and live‐mussel tiles compared to blank tiles. Organic matter differed significantly between blank and live‐mussel tiles.  相似文献

In semi‐aquatic bugs (Heteroptera: Gerromorpha), the strategies of overwintering in a cryothermic state (i.e. at body temperatures below the equilibrium freezing point) remain largely unexplored. The present study provides an analysis of the ecophysiological aspects of overwintering in nine gerromorphan species. All nine species avoid ice formation by means of a more or less extensive supercooling of their body fluids. There is a tight correlation between the supercooling point (SCP) and the lower lethal temperature. Different species use different physiological adjustments to increase the likelihood of survival in a supercooled state. These include stabilization of the supercooled state by active antifreeze factors that cause thermal hysteresis between equilibrium melting and freezing points, the accumulation of low‐molecular weight sugars and polyols with putative cryoprotective functions, or by having a relatively high body fluid osmolality, combined with a low level of hydration. The majority of species under study overwinter only as adults, whereas Velia caprai Tamanini can overwinter either as an adult or in the egg stage. The supercooling capacity of V. caprai adults is insufficient to prevent the risk of lethal freezing. The adults therefore survive only opportunistically in suitable microhabitats, and/or during mild winters. The survival of V. caprai in winter is assured by extensive supercooling and having overwintering eggs that are highly cold tolerant.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS A method is described for the electrophoretic analysis of proteins or RNAs from individual amebae. The method is based on fluorographic autoradiography of semi-micro polyacrylamide gels in which [35S]methionine or [3H]uridine materials from single cells have been subjected to electrophoresis. The method is more sensitive and provides better resolution than previous methods for single cells. It is suitable, also, for quantitation of the separated components.  相似文献
